Business is Picking Up is a program created by Clean Fairfax Council, an environmental non-profit from Fairfax County, VA that focuses on litter issues and community cleanup efforts. As we say, “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the pollution.”
Business is Picking Up was created in an effort to promote sustainable practices at local businesses and organizations through positive reinforcement; Our thinking is that, by highlighting and encouraging those who are doing what they can for the planet, more businesses will take notice and follow suit.
Sustainability efforts on behalf of businesses are an important step on the way to mitigating plastic pollution and creating a cleaner, more equitable and safer planet. Plastic pollution, namely plastic bags, is a prevalent problem throughout Fairfax County. According to studies done in the area, plastic bags are the #1 most littered item in Fairfax County (need citiation) – however, thanks to the recently passed 5-cent plastic bag fee measure, we will see a large reduction in the amount of plastic bag waste found in our local environment in the coming years.
In order to work on the health of our local environment as well as our global environment, we need to do the work together. It is in that spirit that Business is Picking Up was started, and we wish to see the program continue and sign on many more partners as sustainability becomes more and more fashionable.
